Academician Grigory Alexandrovich Gamburtsev (1903-1955) is known in the history of science as one of the founders of geophysical methods for studying the Earth and exploring minerals (oil, gas, uranium ores), the creator of the theory, inventor and designer of seismic equipment. Among Soviet geophysicists, he stood out for his bright features as a scientist, organizer of science, and teacher. Grigory Alexandrovich was the director of the Geophysical Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences, taught at the Moscow Geological Exploration and Oil Institute and Moscow State University, advised the work of production seismic batches, was the leader of the country's seismic explorers, the initiator and leader of work on recognizing nuclear explosions by geophysical methods. After the 1948 Ashgabat earthquake, he organized work and created the first scientific program for earthquake forecasting.
