The new book of the famous, professor at Tufts University and the author of the outstanding works on the philosophy of consciousness Breaking the Spell, Darwin's Dangerous Idea and Consciousness Explained, the American philosopher Daniel Dennett (b. 1942) is an inspired description of the thinker's workshop and working tools, which is simultaneously a kind of synthetic exposition of his philosophy. The author pays particular attention to thought experiments, which he calls "intuition pumps," short stories "that are designed to stimulate sincere, felt intuitive insight." Not limited to such well-known thinking tools as Occam's razor or reductio ad absurdum, the author offers many of his own inventions of this kind. His goal, as always, is to teach us to "think seriously and not without grace about very difficult things."
