What can a respectable citizen do by obeying an order? Reflections on tens of thousands of people in fascist Germany who sent their own kind to death, simply doing their duty, prompted Stanley Milgram to think of a provocative experiment. The behavior of the subjects during various variations of the experiment invariably confirmed Milgram's terrible guesses: some test participants severely "punished" others, not using their right to refuse. The paradox is that virtues such as loyalty, discipline and sacrifice, which we value so much in man, bind people to the most inhumane systems of power.
