German novelist and essayist. Born on October 16, 1927 on the outskirts of Danzig (now Gdansk, Poland), survived all the vicissitudes of the fate of this city. Like most of his peers, Grass was a member of the Hitler Youth, in 1944 he became a soldier. In April 1945 he was wounded, ended up in an American prisoner of war camp.
