The necessary general information from the theory of continuous one-dimensional distributions is given, a number of their important general classes are described. The properties of nine families of basic distributions (normal, lognormal, Cauchy, Weibull, chi-square, gamma, inverse Gaussian, Pareto) are described in detail.
