The stages of artistic design of products on the examples of design study of some machines and devices of food production are considered. Classification of constituent elements of design and their interrelation is presented. A comparison of the functions performed by the mechanical engineer and the design artist is given. A method of designing products by a mechanical engineer taking into account design requirements is proposed.
