The book of Heidelberg Egyptologist Professor Jan Assman is dedicated to the role played by the memory of the past in building cultural identities, including political ones. The memory of the past finds its visible expression in writing, with the invention of which the world of the human hostel is experiencing revolutionary changes. These processes receive theoretical justification in the book, and then are considered on the example of three high cultures of the ancient Mediterranean: Egypt, Israel and Greece.
