More than one generation of historians will puzzle over the reasons for the success of the German military machine in 1939-1942. After all, their opponents had everything the same - tanks, guns, planes, soldiers, and success over and over again remained on the side of the Germans. In the post-war period, it was textbook to reproach the German armed forces for inflexibility and stereotyping. Was that really so?
