On the eve of the new millennium, jockey Martin Stuckley dies at the races. It turns the measured life of his friend, glassblower Gerard Logan, on its head. Logan has to escape from a gang of angry pursuers, acquire bodyguards, act as bait and master the profession of a private detective. At first glance, the reason for all these "New Year's surprises" is a mysterious videotape worth... million pounds. But the investigation leads to a completely unexpected result.
