Peter Nagulin finally found out relations with the NKVD and, it seems to him, convinced the leadership of the USSR of his loyalty. However, the new position brought him new problems. Now he is in Moscow, still located far from the front, but the senior lieutenant of state security cannot calmly observe how hundreds of thousands of surrounded Red Army soldiers die in the Kyiv cauldron, and goes to the authorities with a proposal that once again puts his future fate under a big question.
