Victor Hugo, an active opponent of the death penalty, went, for the sake of higher goals, to a literary hoax - in 1829 he published a short story The last day of a person sentenced to death anonymously, under the guise of a genuine diary of a person sentenced to capital punishment. A sensational success followed, and after it - it was worth opening the name of the author - the equally unprecedented persecution of Hugo in the press... However, the names of the detractors have long been forgotten, and the story still remains one of the strongest works in defense of the inalienable right of a person (even a criminal) to life. The collection also includes a play by Rui Blaz, relating to the romantic period of Hugo's work.
