The publication of a book on the history of St. Petersburg was conceived by the publishing house "Revolutionary Thought" in February 1918, at a time when the Brest negotiations put Russia in such a position that the occupation of its northern capital was quite likely, and the further fate of St. Petersburg deeply worried the entire Russian society.
