The book about the Japanese capital of the 80s is based on many years of observations by the author. The series of essays deals with the mixing in everyday life of Tokyans of modernity and antiquity, the influence of aesthetic representations of the West and the elements of Chinese traditional culture in Japanese life. Scenes from the life of present-day Tokyo are interspersed with small excursions into history.
