This monograph fills a significant gap in Russian historiography. Until now, in Russian there were only articles or chapters in general and special works devoted to individual periods or problems of the history of ancient Macedonia. A. S. Shofman first covered this story throughout its entire length. He did a great deal of research, showing the complexity of the development of Macedonia and establishing the main stages of its history. At the same time, the author studied the historiography of the issue from the first half of the XiX century. to the present day.
