Coming from an impoverished noble family, without any patronage, solely thanks to his own talents and merits, he made a phenomenal career, becoming a general at 24 and an army commander at 26, and then "converting" military victories into a political triumph and establishing a sole dictatorship. The First Consul, and since 1804 the Emperor, Napoleon possessed the greatest power since the time of Caesar, handed out crowns, appointed and removed monarchs, carried out grandiose successful reforms, laying the foundations of the modern world order, dreamed of a campaign to the East, to India, in the footsteps of Alexander the Great.
