All mythology is flesh from the flesh of the people who created it. It, as in a mirror, reflects the character of the parent people, the values that he exalts and cherishes - and the anti-values that he is condemned and denied; also mythology, more precisely, its very spirit, is in direct connection with the habitat of the mythmaking people. And it is very interesting to compare the mythological systems of different peoples, finding in the latter the correspondences and oppositions mentioned above. Europe gives especially rich material for comparisons of this kind - due to its compactness in comparison with other continents. The farther north from the cradle of civilization - the Mediterranean - the harsher the spirit of mythology becomes, the tougher the gods are made, the bloodier the battles, the more tragic the conflicts and the more hopeless the fate. And this "increase in drama" reaches its climax in the mythology of the extreme European North - in the mythology of the Scandinavians.
