This monograph examines the problems of the emergence and development of the Italian city of the VIII-XVI centuries, its economic, political and cultural life, criticizes bourgeois theories of the history of the city. Marx considered the period of urban communes, "free cities" the most brilliant stage, the apogee of the Middle Ages. This period in Italy lasted until the XIV-XV centuries, when the "first beginnings of capitalist production" appeared in individual cities.
