The Royal English School of Embroidery was created at the end of the 19th century by Princess Christian of Schleswig-Holstein, the third daughter of Queen Victoria. The main goals of the creation of the School were to preserve hand embroidery as an art form, as well as to provide a form of employment for women of noble birth who found themselves in cramped circumstances.
