The basic principles of finite elements (FEM) are described in relation to solving a wide range of problems of structural mechanics. Alternative approaches to construction of stiffness matrices by method of forces, displacements and mixed method for rod, plane and spatial systems are given. Along with the traditional approach to plate calculation, the foundations of Reisner's theory are considered and ways of its implementation using computers are proposed.
