All converter technology is based on combinations of four electrical components. Their layout, composition and algorithm of operation will determine which of the types of transducers they will belong to. This also applies to the division into classes within each of the types of converters. The main elements are valves or keys; reactive elements: capacitors, inductors; active elements: resistors.
