Issues arising when determining average values ​ ​ from discrete observations are considered. The focus is on methods of a priori assessment of accuracy based on information on the statistical structure of averaged fields, comparison of the accuracy of various averaging methods and their implementation on computers. Both the aspects of averaging common to different meteorological fields and the specific problems that arise when averaging specific fields, such as precipitation fields or air temperatures, are presented.
