In a hot climate, swamps of evaporation rose in thick jets, preventing them from seeing anything further than five fathoms. Neither a breeze, nor any movement of air - nothing could disperse the fetid haze, thick as milk, creeping over an endless field of swamps. This cloudy formation was just a morning fog in which the evaporation of swamp gases and rotting plants hovered: their mixture had such a smell that it was hardly tolerated even by robber howls accustomed to everything.
