Extremely little information has been preserved about Louis de Saint-Aubin. It is known that he came from a family of artists and was the nephew of the famous engravers in France Charles-Germain de Saint-Aubin (1721-1786), Gabriel de Saint-Aubin (1724-1780) and Augustin de Saint-Aubin (1736-1807). It is believed that he came to Russia at the invitation of Alexander I after the conclusion of the Tilsit Peace. The earliest of his "Russian" works, a portrait of Sergei Lvovich Pushkin, the poet's father, dates back to 1807, the latest - 1824. To date, forty-four portraits painted by him over the years are known. Finally, the last thing that is indicated in the few reference articles about Saint-Aubin is that he died young sometime in the mid-1820s.
