The great German humanist I.G. Herder, in his Treatise on the Origin of Language, enters into controversy with theories of the origin of language that existed in the 18th century: the theological theory of the "divine" origin of human speech, the theory of the origin of language by means of a "social contract" and mechanical materialism that derives language from animal cries. Herder sees language as an inherent property of human consciousness, but, at the same time, approaches it from the point of view of a historian. Herder considers his task to explain the origin of language from the "development of thinking as a product of human mental abilities."
