This paper outlines the basic data on the introduction of modern progressive types of traction in the USSR and abroad at the stages of their historical development, the characteristics of various types of modern locomotives, their fundamental structure and work, as well as the prospects for their development and improvement on the basis of domestic and foreign experience and scientific and technical developments.
