In 1929, the historical novel General BO was published in Berlin. It was the first historical and biographical novel of the writer. In the center of the events are two bright personalities, prominent revolutionaries, members of the Socialist Revolutionary Party, provocateur Evno Azef and terrorist Boris Savinkov. The book arose on the material "Memoirs of a Terrorist" by B. Savinkov and documents about Azef, handed over to the writer by the historian B.I. Nikolaevsky. It tells about the terrorist activities of the Social Revolutionaries and their struggle with the tsarist secret police in 1905-1908. The writer tried to draw psychological portraits of heroes and epochs, sought to reveal the motives of actions, on the one hand - a cold and calculating traitor who planned terrorist attacks and murders with one hand, and betrayed his accomplices to the police with the other; on the other hand, the decadent terrorist Boris Savinkov, who killed not for faith in a bright future, but for the sake of the action itself, struggle, "out of a sense of sports and boredom." The novel reflects different types of revolutionaries: "theorist" V. M. Chernov, idealist Mikhail Gots, "grandmother of the Russian revolution" Breshkovskaya, cabinet scientist P. A. Kropotkin, V. Figner and others. An enthusiastic assessment of the novel was given by the famous French writer K. Megre, defining it as "a historical document and at the same time a work of art."
