The tale of everyday hardships and misadventures of the servant of many gentlemen Lasarillo from Tormes is one of the largest monuments in the history of Spanish realistic prose. Four centuries ago, in Burgos, Alcalá de Henares and Antwerp, almost simultaneously, the three earliest editions of this story known to us were published. They were preceded, apparently, by a publication that had not yet been discovered, which served as the source text for subsequent reprints. The appearance of an anonymous story prompted later commentators to look for its author among some prominent writers of the mid-16th century. So, already at the beginning of the XVII century, in particular, - without special, however, grounds - the outstanding poet, historiographer and diplomat Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, and later - with some degree of probability - the Toledo life writer and satirist Sebastian de Orozco.
