He is known as the author of the capital, gigantic in volume of work EXPERIENCE OF RUSSIAN HISTORIOGRAPHY (T. 1, Prince. 1-2. Kyiv, 1891-1892; Vol. 2, book 1-2. Kyiv, 1908. Total 4432 pp. In 4 books.). The work of V.S. Ikonnikov is a systematic review of sources on the history of Russia, which is distinguished by an extraordinary completeness of accounting for both the sources themselves and the literature about them. However, the publication of the most important book for Russian historical science by V. S. Ikonnikov still remained incomplete: in September 1922, the manuscript of the 3rd book of the 2nd volume was submitted to the academic printing house in Petrograd, but in 1923, shortly before the death of the author, the set was suspended under the pretext of economic difficulties, and in 1928 - scattered. The unreleased part of the huge work presented here is entirely devoted to monuments of personal origin - memoirs and correspondence of Russians, as well as the news of foreigners about Russia.
