Wilhelm von Humboldt (1767-1835) - an outstanding German thinker-humanist - is the creator of the theoretical foundations of the science of language. The works presented in this collection touch upon the most important problems of a general linguistic and philosophical nature, which are the subject of lively discussions in almost all countries of the world. Many of the tasks set by W. von Humboldt and the ideas expressed by him have not yet been developed in modern linguistics; they will require new efforts by future generations of thought scientists, and not linguists alone.
