Based on the use of a wide range of sources, the peculiarities of the legal status of the Ukrainian gentry in the Hetman region after the revolyutsіi of 1648 are investigated. The processes of the equation of the Cossack foreman with Russian service ranks are analyzed. Much attention is paid to the policy of Catherine II until 1781, aimed at eliminating the autonomy of Ukraine-Hetmanate.
