The task of this work is to clarify those general historical conditions that caused the emergence of literature of ancient Russia. The book assumes the reader's acquaintance with the main material of the ancient history of Russian literature, with its main works and historical setting. It made an attempt to trace where and how the oldest literary phenomena arose, to reveal the driving historical forces that led to the emergence of Russian literature.
