This book is about the life of a man in a medieval street. Our hero - more often hypothetical - rarely has his own name. But even nameless, he was not necessarily unhappy or homeless and, as we learn from one Egyptian anecdote of the caliphate's time, playing the key to the door of a non-existent house for the sake of imitating a "dignified position" in the eyes of the street crowd.
