The reign of Nicholas I (1825-1855) coincided with the hegemony of Britain's most powerful colonial power. Many historians, ignoring natural and climatic factors, describe Russia of this time as a country mired in ignorance and savagery. Meanwhile, the Russian Empire managed not only to remain the only state that retained independence, but also to develop a powerful economy.
