In this work, the first attempt was made in Russian historical science to comprehensively analyze more than fifty years of experience in the military district organization of the pre-revolutionary Russian army - an experience of complex and not straightforward. Arising in the course of military reforms D.A. Milyutin, after the defeat of Russia in the Crimean War, military districts became the backbone of the organization of the peacetime army.
