The book of M.I.Pylyaev "Old Moscow" is published in modern spelling with minor changes according to the publication of A.S. Suvorin. "Old Moscow" is a book about the ancient city, life, customs, spectacles and entertainment of Muscovites of the 18th - early 19th centuries. "Old Moscow" by Mikhail Ivanovich Pylyaev is a unique encyclopedia-guide to that mother Moscow, which was already legendary in the 19th century. Unlike imperial Petersburg, Moscow remained a tsarist city, retaining a craving for a free and luxurious life, where the house of any nobleman was the courtyard of an autocratic ruler in miniature. This is a monument to that now epic era, when the appearance of the city and the unique Moscow atmosphere were determined by famous historical figures - Novikov, Rumyantsev, Suvorov, Orlov, representatives of the most noble families - the Naryshkins, Sheremetevs, Yusupovs, Golitsyns. They built palaces and laid parks, kept theaters, organized festivities at which the whole city had fun with all its heart for more than one day.
