Summing up the mental life of the ending century is a difficult task, but at the same time it is so cute and attractive that it completely captivates and captures the one who had the idea of ​ ​ it. She holds him until he carries her out. That is why I decide on this matter, with full consciousness of the riskiness of my enterprise and regardless of any doubts. Of the latter, however, it is necessary to eliminate some from the very beginning. First of all, they may object to me: yes, after all, we have not yet lived at all until the end of the century; this end is two years away; therefore, the results will be premature. However, what would be quite correct when applied to an episodic review is by no means equally applicable to the review of mental and social currents of a more or less prolonged era. In the first case, the possibility of the emergence of new, important facts is not excluded, although this is extremely implausible at the present moment; in the second, mental and social currents do not change so suddenly and quickly. No matter what new happens in this sense, even if we assume that major events in external life could direct the course of world history along a new path for two years, the mental direction that would result from such perturbations would undoubtedly belong to the twentieth century. At the end of the twentieth century, the historian would have to point out that some of the trends and trends that prevailed in it date back to the last years of the nineteenth century.
