The Life of the Twelve Caesars contains biographies of Roman emperors from Caesar to Domitian. All biographies are built according to one schematic plan: the origin and youth of the emperor, his political, military, judicial activities, character traits, appearance, lifestyle, circumstances of death are consistently described. S. depicts Augustus and Titus as ideal rulers. The presentation is distinguished by emphasized factuality, S. is not interested in either historical reasons or psychological motives of events. The amusement of the presentation contributed to the popularity of this work of S. both among contemporaries and later.
