After his retirement in 1874, Lieutenant General Count Ivan Grigorievich Nostitz (1824-1905) became interested in photography and became widely known as a photographer. He made a significant contribution to the development and improvement of light painting, invented a lens, subsequently patented in Great Britain. For his work he was awarded medals and commendations.
