The monograph on significant factual material highlights the history of the emergence and further evolution of urban emblems in Left-Bank Ukraine during the feudal period. To identify the genesis of urban emblems, symbols and emblems that have existed in this territory since ancient times are considered. The emergence of the institution of the city coat of arms is shown in close connection with the patterns of development of Ukrainian feudal cities, the peculiarities of their social structure and legal status. The content of the coat of arms as a historical source is revealed.
