Aguly is one of the small nationalities of the Lezgi language group living in the central part of Southern Dagestan. According to the census of 1989 the total number of aguls is 18.7 thousand people, 17.7 thousand live in the Russian Federation, 13.8 thousand in Dagestan. They are compactly settled in 21 villages located in the upper part of the Chirakh-chay, Kurakh-chay and their tributaries in the territory of Agulsky (the main contingent) and partially Kurakhsky districts in four gorges: Agulder (ss. Tpig, Duldug, Goa, Burkihan, Durshtul, Fite, Missi, Huthul), Kushandere (ss. Yarkug, Kurag, Khudig, Arsug, Burshag, Zirkhe), Kurakhdere (ss. Bedyuk, Kvardal, Usug, Ukuz, Horedzh, Richa) and Hpyugdere (village of Hpyug).
