In Russia of the XVIII century, at the initiative of Peter the Great, an amazing production of decorative and applied products arose, called trellises. Trellises are woven lint-free carpets or hand-woven canvases made of wool or silk, on which either exquisite patterns or whole paintings based on famous works of art are woven. The history of this type of arts and crafts originates in ancient Egypt, then it was revived in medieval Europe, where the works of the French Royal Tapestry Manufactory became the most famous. It was in France that these products began to be called tapestries, but in Russia the name "trellises" took root.
