Starting with an analysis of the conditions necessary for the existence of life, the author then describes the structure of the surfaces and atmospheres of the planets of the solar system and comes to the conclusion that on most of them, with the exception of Venus and Mars, life is completely impossible. Further, the author considers in detail the theories of the origin of planetary systems and the likelihood of the existence of such systems in stars other than the Sun.
