The monograph is dedicated to the publishing initiatives of the Moscow physician-philanthropist Friedrich Joseph (Fedor Petrovich) Haaz (1780-1853). Dr. Haaz's book publishing was aimed at realizing the main task of prison charity - the education and socialization of prisoners; a medical philanthropist taught prisoners literacy, passed on the Christian faith to them. Doctor of Historical Sciences I.V. Semenenko-Basin in this book introduces into scientific circulation and analyzes documents from fifteen archival funds stored in eight different Russian archives. In addition to clarifying all the circumstances of Dr. Haaz's book publishing projects, the monograph describes Haaz's personality, his social activities, and clarifies certain facts of his biography.
