The assault on Königsberg is an important part of the East Prussian operation. Its main task was to break through the enemy's defense by the troops of the 3rd Belorussian Front in the Königsberg direction, the 2nd Belorussian Front in the Marienburg direction, then cut off the East Prussian enemy group from the main armed forces of Nazi Germany and successively destroyed. Initially, this well-prepared operation was led by Ivan Danilovich Chernyakhovsky, but after his death, Alexander Mikhailovich Vasilevsky took everything into his own hands. During the assault on Königsberg, 3,700 Soviet soldiers died. While the Germans who fought behind the stone walls lost 42 thousand killed, more than 70 thousand were captured.
