In this work, the author shows the formation of scientific views and Mendeleev's scientific method against the background of the development of Russian and world science, considers the main stages of Mendeleev's scientific work, his contribution to the development of the doctrine of matter. Much attention is paid to Mendeleev's methodological ideas, which have not lost their significance to date.
