For many centuries, before the opening of the sea route around Africa, the trade of European countries with the central regions of the African continent went along caravan routes through Tripolitania and Cyrenaica. Later, in connection with the development of English and French trade with Central Africa through the coast of the Gulf of Guinea, the old caravan routes lost their significance.
