The publication includes a translation, commentary and study of the book "Three Teachings Point and Direct" (Sango: Shiiki, 797). Its author is Ku: kai (Ko: bo: -daishi, 774-835), a Buddhist monk, founder of the "secret" Shingon school in Japan, one of the most famous masters in the history of classical Japanese literature. "Sango: Shiiki" is considered the first author's literary work created in the Japanese islands. This composition is built as a conversation between the followers of the "three teachings": Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism. The commentary reproduces the old Japanese text, gives explanations of terms and realities, analyzes the sources of direct and hidden quotes. The study includes a brief outline of the history of the emergence of the "three teachings" in Japan, a biography of Ku: kai, notes on the style of "Sango: shiki" and on its Chinese prototypes, as well as an overview of the sources cited in the text, and an analysis of the basic concepts of the "three teachings" included in it.
