Despite the abundance of scientific publications on the Caspian, most of which relate to particular issues of its structure, the main problem of its history - the emergence and existence of a system of successively changing reservoirs from a huge sea basin in akchagyl to the current drainless lake - remains poorly studied with different proposed contradictory solutions.
