The tutorial includes five sections devoted to stress in a word, stress in a sentence, intonation and its types, modifications in coherent speech, practicing practical skills using the "shedowing" method. The presentation of theoretical material is accompanied by questions that make it possible to formulate the rules and laws of the studied phonetic phenomena, as well as practical tasks based on working with modern authentic texts using the shedowing method. The purpose of studying phonetics is to form an understanding of the sound composition of the language and the changes that sounds undergo in the flow of coherent speech, as well as to master the methods of correct articulation of sounds. Of course, the correct articulation of words, as well as the choice of a suitable intonation in the context, for example, of a sentence, is the key to effective communication. This can be achieved through regular practice, as well as by studying the theoretical foundations of phonetic phenomena. The first chapter contains word-level stress information, including different kinds of syllables and syllabic vowels. The second chapter describes the stress within the sentence, discusses the concepts of "semantic group," "pause," "focus word." The third chapter deals with intonation and tones directly related to the focus word. The fourth chapter contains information about the features of coherent speech and various modifications, such as assimilation, elision of consonants, etc. The fifth chapter presents the texts necessary to work out the material studied in the first four chapters, using the "shadowing" method - reading texts together with the announcer, in order to copy its pace and rhythm, features of coherent speech, etc. It is important to note that this chapter is built on the principles of cyclical learning, i.e. a certain part of the texts for practice is meaningfully related to the phonetic phenomena studied in the textbook. An integral part of working with these texts using the "shedowing" method is the independent compilation of markings by students (setting pauses, determining drums and focus words, tones, etc.), as well as subsequent reading of the text according to the resulting markings.
