Popadanets, remembering something from school chemistry and pharmacology, which he encountered at work, inventing and fighting in Abyssinia (apparently, the first of the Popadans), still succeeds, despite all the opposition of the author, sending him hardships and trials. The final chapter looks tragic, but this is not the end of the book, but just another test through which the main character is destined to go.
